Knight of the Order of Orange Nassau with Swords

Established on 4 April 1892 by Queen Regent Emma acting for Queen Wilhelmina, the Orde van Oranje-Nassau recognizes those with special merits for society. The military division, denoted by crossed swords, honors military personnel for notable service. The rank of Ridder (Knight) is conferred for significant contributions. During World War II, it was awarded to individuals who assisted in the liberation of the Netherlands. The order includes six grades, and recipients are typically announced on the Monarch's official birthday. In the Netherlands, titles or post-nominals are generally not used.

Captain John Kenneth French

Date of Award: December 22, 1945

Citation

Captain French served throughout the campaign in Northwest Europe on the staff of the Deputy Director Mechanical Engineers, Headquarters First Canadian Army. During the latter part of the campaign, his principal duty was the coordination of all the recovery facilities of the Canadian Army. The expeditious and efficient manner in which tanks, lorries, guns and other equipment which had become damaged in action were evacuated to Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers repair installations was due in no small measure to the devotion to duty and able administration displayed by this officer. He was at all times ready to do more than was asked of him and he was undoubtedly responsible for salvaging much valuable equipment at a time when it was urgently required for further operations in Holland.
