United States Bronze Star Medal (BSM)

The Bronze Star Medal is a United States Armed Forces decoration established in 1944, awarded for heroic or meritorious achievement or service in a combat zone. It recognizes acts of heroism, merit, or meritorious service not involving aerial flight. The medal can be awarded to members of the U.S. military and, under certain conditions, to foreign soldiers who have served with or alongside a U.S. service branch. Canadian military personnel who have distinguished themselves in combat while serving with U.S. forces may be eligible for this honour.


Captain Sidney Lyle Erwin Date of Award: March 30, 1946 Citation Captain Erwin served throughout the entire Northwest European campaign with an Infantry Troops Workshop, Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and during the latter stages of the campaign was second-in-command of his unit. During all of this period, he distinguished himself by meritorious service of an outstanding nature. It was his duty to coordinate the activities of the various sections of the Workshop, and by the manner in which he unselfishly devoted himself to his duties, by his industry and initiative, and by the example of his own buoyant personality, he succeeded in his task to a marked degree. This officer was directly responsible for returning to service much valuable equipment at times when it was urgently required for important operations.
