The Legion of Merit is a military award of the United States Armed Forces established in 1942 to recognize exceptionally meritorious conduct in outstanding services and achievements. The Commander degree is one of four levels and is awarded to foreign military personnel and political figures for service comparable to that of a major general. It is one of only two U.S. military decorations issued as a neck order and the only one awarded in degrees, similar to orders of chivalry. This award is conferred upon non-U.S. nationals.
